Trojans suffer loss to Mount Vernon

December 5, 2018
By Allison Graham - Sports Editor (agraham@tamatoledonews.com) , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

An untimely injury put South Tama boys basketball leading scorer Keith Keahna on the bench last Tuesday evening. Keahna suffered an injury after taking a hard fall against Grinnell and was seen in a boot at the Trojans home season opener.

STC hosted Mount Vernon for their second contest of the season. Without their returning starter and leading scorer, the Trojans struggled and ultimately fell 66-27.

There is not so much a lack of effort on the court as the Trojans are trying to find a rhythm with a brand new team. Sophomore Bishop Chavez led offensively with 9 points while the 6-7 sophomore post player Eli Keahna led the Trojans with 7 rebounds. Eli is the younger brother of Keith Keahna.

It gets said a lot at South Tama but in this case it's quite accurate that this is a young team especially in terms of experience. Seniors Roger Flores, Hector Ramirez and Cam Klostermann all played significant minutes for the Trojans on Tuesday. However, despite their age, their volume of experience at the varsity level is very low. Flores and Ramirez suited up with the varsity team last season but played only a handful of minutes. Klostermann meanwhile played as a freshman but was not out for the team during the last two years.

There just wasn't much the Trojans could do against a bigger and faster Mount Vernon team.

The Trojans will have to shake off the loss and regroup. They will be on the road to Marion on December 4 and home to host Maquoketa on Friday, Dec. 7.
