Ruth C. Anderson

Ruth C. Anderson, longtime resident of Toledo, Iowa passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Oak Park Place, Dubuque, Iowa. She was born on September 12, 1920, the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth Comiskey of Des Moines, Iowa. She was the last survivor of nine children.

Ruth graduated with a teaching degree from Drake University in 1946 and married Harry R. Anderson of Marshalltown in 1949. Ruth and Harry moved to a farm northeast of Toledo in 1950 and began a dairy business. They continued to farm and raise cattle until 1975. They lived on the farmstead and enjoyed retirement and travel until Harry's death at age 85 in 2000. Ruth proudly lived in her own home until moving to Dubuque 2016.

Ruth was well known and admired by many area residents as an elementary school teacher and volunteer in Toledo and Tama in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. She volunteered as a den mother for her son's Cub Scouts and taught swimming lessons at the Toledo pool. She was also deeply devoted to and active in the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Ruth was proud of her relationship to the painter Grandma Moses (her father's cousin) and was known for giving skits in which she portrayed the painter for local clubs and organizations.

She is survived by her children, Richard Anderson of Dubuque and Iowa City, Gary Anderson of Bluemont, Virginia, and Shari Grieve of Dover, New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Kirk, Colleen, and Peter; three great-grandchildren, Blake, Crystal, and Annette; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church of Toledo will be held at a later date to be announced.
