Waseskuk takes first at Bill Van Horn Invite

Senior Aiden Waseskuk left the mat with a huge smile on his face last Saturday. Waseskuk, who wrestles at 182 for the Trojans, took his first ever varsity championship at the Bill Van Horn Invite on December 15.

Waseskuk received a bye in the quarterfinal round. He pinned Connor Vroegh from Norwalk in the semis and finished his day with a pin over Conner Reed of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Also having strong finishes for the Trojans were Logan Arp, Brayden Smith, Vincent Branan, Dallas Horne and Cael Kellogg who each finished third.

At 113, Arp won by medical forfeit over Tyler Landgrebe of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Smith won by an 8-4 decision over Ryan Van Donselaar of Pella at 138. At 152 Branan won by an 8-7 decision over Alan Angle of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Senior Dallas Horne won by a 4-2 decision over Ethan Smith of Bondurant-Farrar at 160. Senior Cael Kellogg won with a fall over Pella's Braydon Peterson at 220.

Finishing 4th for the Trojans were Brody Chyma, Boden Koehler and Aaron Neave. Chyma lost his final match to Chris Ludtke of Ottumwa by fall at 106. At 132 Koehler took a loss to Landon Card of Norwalk at 132. Aaron Neave also took fourth after falling in the third place match to Pella's Nate Kissinger by 10-8 decision.

Finishing in 5th place were Kyler Smith, Payton Vest and Kalem Schrock. Smith won his final match by 6-3 decision over Jackson Bruns of Benton Community at 120. At 170 Vest pinned Zachary Piersel of Oskaloosa. Schrock stuck Tyson Breuklander of Oskaloosa in the semifinals and received a bye in the 5th place match to close out his day.

Taking 6th place were Brady Knode and Garrett Arp. Knode fell to Salvador Gonzalez of Oskaloosa by 10-7 decision at 126. Arp took a 10-2 major decision loss to Jacksen Kargol of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

The Trojans ended the day in third place with one champion, five 3rd place winners, three 4th place winners, three 5th place winners and two 6th place winners.

The Trojans will resume their season following the holiday break with a double dual at Center Point-Urbana on Thursday, January 3.
