Musgrave has season high for win against Vinton

December 21, 2018

It has been a slower start to the season but STC senior, Jessica Musgrave found her rhythm on Tuesday evening. The South Tama Trojans (4-5) hosted Vinton-Shellsburg (1-8) for a WaMaC Conference contest. The Trojans captured their first conference win over the Vikettes, 71-41.

Musgrave is very much used to creating her own opportunities to score. She is very good at honing in on the ball and challenging her opponent. Musgrave will often force steals in the opponent's back court and take off with the loose ball down the court for a transition bucket. It's how she earned her 1000th career point as a junior and helped catapult her to the top of the Class 3A scoring list last year.

"Jessica did seem to be in a rhythm. The box and one they ran didn't seem to affect her. It slowed her down a little bit in the first quarter as she got used to it but then she just started playing," said coach Todd Dale.

Trojan fans hadn't seen much of that yet this season as the Trojans have faced tough competition in the early going with ranked opponents including Marion, CPU, Grinnell, and DeWitt. The senior combo guard has been double teamed most of the year thus far. But Musgrave found her groove on Tuesday, finishing with a triple double off of 28 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 steals.

What was also equally exciting on Tuesday was the performance of two other Trojan seniors. Jaelin Berger and Zoee Buffalo each had 12 points. Buffalo also had 6 rebounds while Berger had 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Getting more players involved offensively has been a goal that Coach Dale has had for his team since taking over last season.

"That's what we need to get. We've talked about getting more kids to double digits. We still need to push some more up there and hopefully we are getting some kids started. Vinton is a bit of a struggling team but they are scrappers and they proved that here tonight. I thought the girls did a really good job. We need to come out and play like this again on Friday night and go into Christmas break and try to tweak a few things and get better," said Dale.

Starting for the Trojans were Jaelin Berger, Jessica Musgrave, Carissa Musgrave, Taylor Ray and Madison Rohach.

The Trojans jumped out to an early lead and after the first quarter were up 23-12. However the Vikettes cut into the lead at the top of the second quarter. The quarter started with two free throws by Azra Swayzer. Buffalo made one shot before Vinton's Lucy Howes-Vonstein scored a bucket and Kaitlin Meyer sunk back-to-back three pointers to put the Vikettes within four points at 25-21.

Following a timeout the Trojans returned to the court and extended their lead back out to 12 points. At half the Trojans led 38-26.

The second half was pretty much dominated by the Trojans. STC scored 33 points and held the Vikettes to just 15. With the Trojans up by almost 30 points Dale looked to his bench to finish out the night with just under three minutes to play.

Another highlight for the Trojans is that Tylese Rosenberger has returned to the lineup. She has been recovering from an injury sustained last year.

"Tylese gives us another person we are confident can bring the ball down the floor. She's still hesitant and there are a lot of coaches in the stands trying to tell her what to do and I really need her to listen to us and to trust that we'll bring her back in safely. Everybody thinks she is going to come back and be the same player she was at the end of last season but she had a major injury and she is going to have to come back and gain her confidence. She is an outstanding addition to have back," said Dale.

The Trojans will be home tonight for a conference contest with Independence.
