Benton Bobcats blast past STC Trojans

February 1, 2019

After a week of postponing games due to winter weather, the Trojans took to the gym on Friday evening. STC had been scheduled to play Center Point-Urbana on Friday, January 18 and Clear Creek-Amana the following Tuesday. However winter has been wreaking havoc on school schedules across the central portion of the state. The Trojans had not seen the court competitively for over a week.

Finally last Friday, the weather allowed for STC to host Benton for a WaMaC West conference matchup.

Following tipoff the Bobcats went on a nine point unanswered scoring spree behind the three point shooting of senior guard, Dylan Spina. STC's team leader, Keith Keahna, meanwhile managed to get the Trojans on the board after two minutes of play.

Heading into the second quarter the Trojans trailed 16-10. STC's Matthew Wiese hit a shot from the three point line giving the Trojans a little spark. Wiese continued to find the hoop scoring two more buckets for a 7 point run. The Trojans took a one point lead before Benton scored again. Keahna then put the Trojans back up at 19-18. The lead was short lived though as Benton once again returned for two baskets that gave them a three point lead. The Trojans managed to hang with Benton through the second quarter, trailing by just 10 points going into halftime.

Following halftime the Trojans were simply overtaken by a well-armed and athletic Bobcat squad. Benton had nearly 10 more players to pull from their bench than did the Trojans. 17 upperclassmen saw the court for Benton on Friday, 11 of them scoring points.

The Trojans scored just twice in the third quarter with Benton opening up their offense. The Bobcats outscored STC 23-4. The final eight minutes was more of the same. Benton outscored STC 20-6 and ultimately won 76-33. Keahna led the Trojans with 16 points while Spina led the Bobcats with 23 points.
