STC speech students perform at Kiwanis

March 25, 2019
Special To The News-Herald , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

At the March 13 Kiwanis meeting, members were treated to performances by some of the individual speech contestants. Their coach, Katie Murphy, said that the individual speech team earned 15 division I ratings out of 21 entrants - a very impressive showing. She said they have yet to find out about outstanding performers awards.

One performance was by Luis Avalos who sang and acted a musical solo about a very nervous young man who is to have dinner with a very special girl at 8 pm. Luis is just a freshmen at STC, so it will be enjoyable to see his continued work in speech and drama.

Makayla Backen gave a public address. She chose a graduation speech given by Sandra Bullock to a college graduating class in 2016. The speech was full of wisdom with humor interspersed, making a very fun performance.

Sydney Parizek entertained the group with an interpretive prose piece. It featured a "disturbed" woman who experiences trauma trying to buy a can of tuna, hailing a taxi and being assisted by a street musician when she experienced a fall. The lady showed a very dramatic response to her frustration, which was humorous and definitely "disturbed."

The final performance was by Julie Matta. It was a powerful look into the world of those experiencing multiple personalities. Julie's ability to move from one personality to another was masterful in its detailed nuances and totally convincing.

Although at the time of this writing, outstanding performers' announcements have not been made, these talented students could easily earn that honor. Congratulations to all the contestants and their coach on an excellent year.
