Seek to wear Al Exito stoles at graduation

Members of the Al Exito, a"Youth to Success" organization is seeking South Tama School Board permission for their senior class members to wear a decorative garment item, an Al Exito stole," during the May 19 graduation ceremonies.

The group has a total of 42 members in grades 7-12 this year, having grown from 14 in 2018 leader Nadia Jimenez told board members during a presentation at the April 23 school board meeting. They believe their group should be recognized as an official student group, Dan Lopez, guidance counselor said.

The request comes on the heels of the approval for the top of mortar boards worn during graduation to be decorated with approved slogans this year.

Previously, Native?American students were allowed to attach bead work to the graduation caps but no other decor was previously allowed.

Board members promised a decision on the request at the May 6 board meeting.
