STC Girls Tennis Battles Mustangs

May 3, 2019
From Steve Bearden - Girls Tennis Coach , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The South Tama Girls Tennis Team hosted the Mount Vernon Mustangs on Friday, April 26th and despite several close matches fell 0-9. Representing South Tama at #1 Singles, Senior Abbie Morgan staged a dramatic comeback against Megan Zobac. Falling behind 2-6, Morgan rallied by steadying her serve and becoming more consistent with her ground strokes. Evening things at 6-6, Morgan seemed to have grabbed the momentum in the match. She led 8-7 before Zobac held serve to force a tiebreaker at 8-8. In the tiebreaker, Zobac's game was just enough as she won the tiebreaker seven points to five and the match 9-8(5).

Sophomore Hope Werner stepped on court at #4 Singles against Mandy Morrical. In another close match, Werner raced to an early 4-1 lead. Morrical found her game just in time as she reeled off four straight games to jump ahead 5-4. The two played even from that point on as Morrical held serve to secure the 8-6 win for the Mustangs.

STC Senior Anna Glendy locked into a battle at #3 Singles against Lauren McCollum. The match seemed to take on three storylines for observers. Early on, both players kept pace with their opponent as they calculated their best options in the match. Tied at 2-2, McCollum went on a run that helped her build a 6-3 lead. Over the final games of the match, Glendy actually won more games than her opponent as she snatched three of the five games. McCollum's lead was enough as she held on for the 8-6 win.

Senior Kaylynn Dunn started slow against Erin Fencl at #5 Singles when she fell behind 1-6. Dunn refused to give up in the match as she actually finished stronger than her opponent in securing three of the final five games. Fencl's early lead was too much to overcome as Dunn fell 4-8. Queta Wanatee-Diego faced off with Annalise Harp at #6 Singles. She played her opponent even early in the match as they battled to a 2-2 score. Harp powered her way to victory in the end by a final score of 3-8. Senior Zoee Buffalo fell at #2 Singles to Ashley Vis. Vis grabbed the 8-1 win for Mount Vernon.

In doubles action, Morgan/Buffalo faced Vis/Morrical at #1 Doubles. The talented seniors from STC battled well, but were defeated by a 4-8 final score. At #2 Doubles, Glendy/Wanatee-Diego matched up against Zobac/McCollum. The duo from Mount Vernon were too good as they defeated the Trojans 8-1. In the final doubles match, Werner/Dunn took on Klotzbach/Fencl at #3 Doubles. Trailing just 2-3, Werner/Dunn won just one of the next six games to suffer a 3-8 loss.

The South Tama JV tied the Mount Vernon JV 9-9. South Tama recorded doubles victories by Kaisha Wanatee/Alexes Baeza, Abby Buffalo/Clarissa Rosenberger, Jordyn Cremeans/Klohe Chyma (2), Jaydee Thiessen/Skyler Steveson, Richelle Werner/Adriana Cervantes, Allison Thomazin/Alexes Baeza, Richelle Werner/Clarissa Rosenberger, and Aracely Martinez/Elysia Aguilera.
