May 17, 2019
From Steve Bearden - Girls Tennis Coach , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team hosted former NICL opponent, the Union Knights, on Monday, May 6 and recorded a 6-3 win. STC grabbed four of six singles matches to take control of the meet at the halfway point. After a short interruption by rain, the Trojans took two of three doubles matches to secure the victory.

Senior Abbie Morgan had no trouble at #1 Singles against Jayden Jolley as she easily cruised to an 8-0 win. Morgan's powerful serve and consistent forehand were reliable weapons in her victory. Senior Zoee Buffalo trailed 4-5 at #2 Singles against Hannah Gates before she took control of the match. Buffalo built enough momentum with her strong serve to seize the final four games of the match to win 8-5.

Sophomore Hope Werner matched up with Anna Smith at #4 Singles. Werner wasted no time in racing to a 6-1 lead. Smith made things interesting as she gained enough momentum to make the match interesting as she trailed 5-7. In the end Werner showed grit in winning the final game to snag an 8-5 victory for the Trojans.

Senior Queta Wanatee-Diego faced Ellie Behrens at #6 Singles. Trailing 3-5, Wanatee-Diego battled back to break serve and tie things at 5-5. Amazing foot speed by Wanatee-Diego allowed her to reel off the final three games of the match to win 8-5.

Union seized just two singles wins on the night. Alexa Weber defeated South Tama's Anna Glendy 8-2 at #3 Singles. Madelon Rathe defeated STC's Kaylynn Dunn at #5 Singles by a score of 8-2.

A brief rain shower slowed play down for a time, but could not derail the Trojan's Efforts. Morgan/Buffalo faced Jolley/Gates in #1 Doubles Action. The talented seniors from STC marched to an early 5-0 lead before finally surrendering a game. Morgan's accurate serve and Buffalo's net game were too strong for their opponents as they cruised to an 8-2 win.

Glendy/Wanatee-Diego teamed for STC at #2 Doubles to face Behrens/Sophie Winkelpleck. Glendy/Wanatee-Diego took an early lead in the match at 3-2 before their opponents broke serve to even it at 3-3. From that point on, Glendy controlled the net while Wanatee-Diego controlled the baseline to give Behrens/Winkelpleck little hope. Posting an 8-3 victory, the STC Seniors added to the win tally for the Trojans.

Union grabbed the final point of the meet when Alexa Weber/Belle Weber eeked out a win at #3 Doubles 8-5 over Werner/Dunn.

The JV Action was canceled due to the expectation of more rain.
