We need more Grizzly Adams!

Cutting up some lumber the other day, I discarded pieces into the trash only to stop and think how wasteful I was being. And in a broader context, how wasteful we are in our country?

Living in Chicago years ago, I was sitting on our deck when a heavily bearded, bushy-haired, filthy-looking, Grizzly Adams-like man came pushing a grocery cart down our alley, filled with treasures he'd pulled out of other garbage cans.

He stopped at our garbage can, bent over its rustiness, and head-to-waist, disappeared into the bottom of the can. And he was gone from view for some time!

Finally, he drew himself out of the can holding an empty jar of jelly. He carefully unscrewed the lid, took out his pocket knife and began scrapping the meager remaining contents left inside of the jelly jar. Then he licked his knife clean, carefully screw the lid back onto the jar, place the jar back into the garbage can and proceeded cheerfully down the alley to the next set of cans.

God has given us such abundance. Yet, so much goes to waste. May God help us to be better "Grizzly Adams" of His creation!
