STC Girls Tennis Dominates Maquoketa 8-1

The South Tama County Girls Tennis Team hosted WaMaC foe Maquoketa on a cold, blustery night May 9th and came away with a decisive 8-1 victory. The Trojans surrendered just 27 games over nine matches played.

STC Senior Abbie Morgan made quick work of her match against Allyson Lema at #1 Singles. Lema won the second game of the match before Morgan reeled off seven straight games to win 8-1. Zoee Buffalo trailed 0-1 against Jaclyn Stone at #2 Singles before winning eight straight games. Buffalo's serve was in high gear as she posted an 8-1 win for the Trojans.

Senior Anna Glendy matched up with Jenna Wiebenga at #3 Singles. The freshman from Maquoketa was a formidable opponent for Glendy as she built a 4-3 lead. Glendy's determination helped to turn the match around as she went on a 5-0 run to secure the 8-4 victory. Sophomore Aubrey Roberts of South Tama was pressed into varsity action due to player injury. She made the most of the opportunity against Lilith Biehl at #4 Singles. Roberts led 4-3 before she blew the match open with steady serves and excellent footwork. Roberts won 8-3.

Queta Wanatee-Diego had no trouble at #5 Singles with Alexis Springer. She pressured her opponent into multiple errors en route to an 8-1 win. Sophomore Alexes Baeza made her singles debut as she stepped onto the court at #6 Singles for STC against Brooke Dundee. She built a 6-2 lead before Dundee raced back to even the match. Keeping pace, both players moved the match to 7-7. Dundee was able to grab the match in the end by a score of 9-7 to win the lone match of the night for Maquoketa.

Morgan/Buffalo teamed at #1 Doubles for the Trojans to play Lema/Stone. The talented STC Seniors were no match for their opponents as they took the match 8-0. Glendy/Wanatee-Diego found themselves trailing early in their match at #2 Doubles against Wiebenga/Biehl by a score of 2-3. Steadying their game, they fought back to take the lead for good at 4-3. They won four of the next six games to win the match 8-5 for STC.

Roberts/Baeza matched up with Springer/Dundee at #3 Doubles. Trailing 1-2, Roberts/Baeza went on a run to win seven of the next eight games to grab the match 8-3.

In JV action, The Trojans defeated the Cardinal by a score of 9-2. South Tama won doubles matches by the following teams: Jaydee Thiessen/Skyler Steveson, Hanah Novotny/Abby Buffalo, Kaisha Wanatee/Molly Savage, Adriana Cervantes/Grace Novotny, Klohe Chyma/Kenya Hackenmiller, Allison Thomazin/Alaria Harken, Lucy Winter Chaser/Aracely Martinez, Emma Sauerbry/Alysia Aguilera, and Lizbeth Sotelo/Katrina Garcia.
