South Tama School Board members learned Monday it is planned for the newly-formed school facilties committee to hold its initial meeting on Monday, June 17.

The committee is an outgrowth of a study of the district buildings conducted earlier this year by Estes Construction. It was the first study of the district properties since 2010. The new findings ranged from "urgent" to "recommended."

"It's meant to be a planning tool for the board and district -other than urgent (needs)," Mike Carroll, project executive for Estes told the school board members on April 8."

STC?Superintendent Jared Smith told The News-Herald "The school board and I put together a diverse list of staff, parents, and community members that will serve on the panel. Invites were sent to about 40 people and we plan on a group of about 30 coming. I was not planning on other public attending, but if someone shows up I am not going to turn them away."

He added, "We will give the committee an opportunity to provide feedback on their perceptions of the next steps that are needed to address (repair, add on to, replace, etc.) buildings within our district. We will go building by building and each committee member will provide individual feedback."

The district list of main buildings includes the high and elementary schools and the Partnership Center in Tama and the middle school in Toledo.
