By Steve Bearden , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The South Tama County Girls and Boys Tennis Programs marked a milestone when they competed at the 2019 State CoEd Tennis Meet at the Waveland Tennis Complex in Des Moines on Tuesday, June 4th. Sponsored by the IGHSAU and IAHSAA, the event is the only High School CoEd Tennis Meet held in the United States. STC Seniors Abbie Morgan, Zoee Buffalo, Abdul Musalif, and Freshman Lance Davenport joined 100 players from 24 schools in mixed doubles play.

Morgan/Davenport faced Clarke's Deseree Stubbe/Evan Hagen in the first round of play. Stubbe qualified for the 2019 IGHSAU Class 1A State Tennis Meet in doubles. A single service break proved to be the difference in set number one as Clarke grabbed the set 6-3. STC had their chances in set two, but failed to capitalize on the deciding points. Clarke notched a 6-3, 6-2 win.

In a consolation match, Morgan/Davenport matched up with North Polk's Alia Springer/Brennan Gehring. Morgan's strong serve and Davenport's return game helped the Trojans grab a quick lead en route to a 6-2 win in set number one. Springer/Gehring battled back to turn the momentum in set number two as they secured a 6-2 win. In the deciding tiebreaker, both teams battled to a 7-7 tie. North Polk was able to win the final three points to record a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(7) victory.

Buffalo/Musalif teamed for the first time ever as they faced a difficult first round opponent in Pella's Brooke Jorgensen/Jordan Roozeboom. Jorgensen placed 6th in singles at the 2019 IGHSAU Class 1A State Tennis Meet. Roozeboom placed 8th in singles at the 2019 IAHSAA Class 1A State Tennis Meet. The Dutch proved too tough as they notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

In a consolation match, Buffalo/Musalif took on Ballard's Lindsey Kaldenberg/Max Olson. Olson qualified for the 2019 IAHSAA Class 1A State Meet in doubles. Buffalo and Musalif utilized strong serving to keep the Trojans competitive, but the duo from Ballard grabbed the victory 6-2, 6-1.

STC Girls Coach Steve Bearden will turn his focus to rebuilding a program that graduated 80% of its varsity lineup. Boys Coach Ander Rutledge looks to build on the momentum created this season while graduating just two players.
