Calls on legislators to solve labeling disaster

June 21, 2019
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Letter to the Editor:

As a young local farmer, I am having a "beef" with an upcoming trend. The impossible burger and fake meats trend is growing in popularity.

Being in the Ag industry, we must accept and mold to the consumers needs and trends while continuing to inform consumers of safety and security in products currently being consumed. Unfortunately, naming a product such as lab grown cell cultured meat as meat is unacceptable. Iowa is home to over 88,000 farms with 97% being family owned.

On these farms in 2012 over three million cows were raised. Having a growing trend which is targeted to decimate these family farms would be extremely detrimental to Iowa as a whole.

The labeling dilemma includes all products including milk.

Our legislators must act now to solve this labeling disaster before it's too late. Iowa farmers take pride in products we produce and care for. It's time for Iowa consumers to join hands and stand up for what's right for our great state and farm families.
