The South Tama County Trojans were on the road to LaPorte City last Thursday evening to take on the Union Knights for the first time in six years. Five innings in, the Trojans ended the game with a pop up fly ball caught by STC senior Enriqueta Wanatee-Diego, winning 11-1.

The night before their road game, the Trojans were scheduled to play Central DeWitt but weather forced a postponement.

"We ended up having a night off and we told the girls lets come out and get two W's, JV and Varsity. Our girls did that. They came out and put the ball in play and that's what we wanted to do. We talked on Tuesday after playing pretty well against Grinnell, we had one bad inning in there, but through five innings we played pretty tough after getting beat by them last year. I think the girls are so mental. They come into a game thinking this is a team we can beat where they go into games like against Williamsburg thinking I don't know if we can win. They beat us bad last year, so it's that mental focus and mental confidence. They had really good mental focus and confidence and it was fun! It was a fun game. We made some good plays. Queta had a good catch there at the end to end the game. This is what softball is about," said coach Chelsea Ahrens.

Leading the Trojans from the mound was STC's Ashlynn Ellenbecker. Ellenbecker recorded the win and allowed six hits, one run and threw for six strikeouts.

Offensively the Trojans had the most success in the third inning, scoring seven runs. Abby Sandvick and Morgan Haughey led the Trojans from the plate with two hits each. Both Sandvick and Haughey recorded three RBIs as well.

Pitching for Union was Sarah Roberts. Roberts allowed five hits, 11 runs eight of which were earned. She walked five and struck out two.

"We've been in Union's shoes where you are struggling to throw strikes and the game is hitting really slow. We've been there. I thought Ashlynn did good having six strikeouts. She hit her spots and we had a couple of different times when Union girls were on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and they didn't score anything. Getting out of tough situations is something we are used to doing," said Ahrens.

STC Softball Trivia

Some trivia for STC fans is that the last time the Trojans played the Knights was at Union six years ago in 2013. The Trojans were paired against the Knights in the first round of post season play. It would have been the junior year for Hailee Weiss who now coaches the freshman team and Sam Holtz who volunteers with the team. The Knights were seeded higher than STC but the Trojans managed to sneak a 1-0 win over Union to advance in the post season. It was the last time they won a post season game, and it was the first time in 20 years the team had won a post season game.

"I told Hailee, that this field was good luck," said Ahrens.
