Unusual visitors in the Chelsea area

July 14, 2019
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Sheryl Chute, Chelsea, said a call from Ron Bradley who spotted what are identified as black-bellied-whistling-ducks who saw them on his pond on June 23. Sheryl says they were gone but she was able to track them down and photographed them the next day on Roger Boldt's pond. Not a duck often seen here, State Game Warden Brett Reese, Toledo, confirmed the ducks identity to The Chronicle: "That's what they are. It is unusual, but not unheard of for them to appear here. We get about one report per year in Iowa of this duck observed in this state. How did they get here you want to know? - Wild bird ranging further north then usual. It happens."
