Supervisors to consider tanning facilities regulations

July 14, 2019
By John Speer - Editor (jspeer@tamatoledonews.com) , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Tama and all other Iowa counties now have the option of establishing an ordinance governing tanning bed operations. The Iowa Department of Health ceased overseeing and providing almost all support for the program due to what it said in a notice were"previous budget reductions" on July 1.

If they believe warranted, "It's up to the counties to enforce," Todd Apfel, Tama County environmentalist told the board of supervisors on Monday, July 8.

Apfel said the county has been performing the inspections under state regulations but must now have its own ordinance if the practice is to continue. He said the Tama County Board of Health had approved a proposed ordinance for the supervisors consideration.

It provides for minimum requirements for tanning beds which Apfel said includes using the proper size of light bulbs and cleanliness of the facility. In addition, fees for licenses and inspections and a misdemeanor penalty are provided.

Apfel said the charge has been $33 annually per tanning bed for inspection.

The board placed consideration of the ordinance on the agenda for the July 15 regular meeting.
