Conservation Reserve Program continues to Aug. 23

July 15, 2019
Special to The New-Herald , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The Farm Service recently announced a continuous CRP sign up for landowners beginning June 3 and ending on Aug. 23. Landowners will have the opportunity to sign up for a variety of options and some of them include grass waterways, filter strips, riparian buffers, and wetland restoration programs.

The CRP program gives landowners an annual payment for 10 or 15 years depending on the program. FSA also provides cost share for the required seedings and construction needed to implement these projects. Mid Contract Management is also required during the contract to enhance the habitat stand.

Landowners with contracts of less than 15 years do have the option to extend their current contract for one year. Landowners wishing to put land in for the first time need to have cropping history four of the six years from 2012- 2017.

The CRP program was implemented to protect environmentally sensitive areas and provide soil erosion control better water quality and wildlife habitat. I have seen a renewed interest in landowners wanting to get some of their wetter less productive acres into one of these programs, especially after the wet spring that we have had this year.

FSA is also planning a General CRP sign up sometime later this year. Contact your local FSA office at (641) 484- 2702 for more information.

You can also contact Jason Gritsch private Lands Technician with the Iowa DNR at (641) 751- 1432.
