Kids go on “Journey Into Space” at Toledo Library

July 23, 2019
By Sherri McFate - Assistant Librarian , Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The Toledo Public Library took our young patrons on a journey into space with this year's "A Universe of Stories" summer reading theme. There we met a group of friendly aliens who took us on a tour of outer space.

We met the aliens from Claire Freeman's book "Aliens Love Underpants" and "The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot" by Margaret McNamara. From there we had a "Field Trip to the Moon" by John Hare and we learned "How to Catch a Star" by Oliver Jeffers.

During our tour of space, the younger kids drew their own aliens and spaceships out of paper plates. The older kids made their own aliens out of painted puzzle pieces, while also creating their own planet landscape for them to live on.

On our way to the moon, we stopped in space so the kids could create their own constellations using stickers and poster board. They also painted portraits of the moon using tin foil, paint and poster board. On our return home we made moon sand using flour and baby oil.

We returned only to discover that some of our Pet Rock Alien friends had followed us home.

Our tour of outer space has completed, but the kids will continue to read and keep track of their reading at home. The last day to turn in their reading logs for a free book will be July 31.
