Nurse Aide Phase 1 or 75-Hour course starting soon

MARSHALLTOWN The Nurse Aide Phase 1 or 75-Hour Nurse Aide class will be offered in Marshalltown beginning Thursday, July 25, with mandatory orientation from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. This class educates students in the basic level of knowledge and the demonstration of skills needed to provide safe, effective resident care. The course meets the requirement of the Department of Inspection and Appeals for nursing assistants / direct care givers working in long-term care and skilled facilities. Upon completion, a student is eligible to take the written and skills performance competency tests to become a Certified Nursing Assistant in the State of Iowa.

The Nurse Aide class will meet Aug. 19 to Sept. 11 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3 to 8:30 pm at the Iowa Veterans Home (Dack basement) at 1301 Summit St. in Marshalltown. Additional dates and times will be added depending on class size and weather delays/cancellations. The last day of class will be Sept. 26, with the final exam given at the Iowa Valley Continuing Education Center (room 614) starting at 3 pm.

At the July 25 class, students will complete the required paperwork for background checks and must bring their Social Security cards and a black pen to class. Students will also need to provide documentation of up-to-date immunizations, influenza immunization and two step TB test. The second mandatory orientation meeting is on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. The required forms are online at ce.iavalley.edu/workforce-education/health/direct-care/.

Students will incur costs for the background check ($25), class ($599), and book, as well as the uniform, shoes, watch with a second hand, influenza vaccine, immunizations, and TB testing.

Upon completion of the class, lab and clinical the students are eligible to complete the state nurse aide computer competency exam ($55) and the skills exam ($95). Upon passing both exams students are then placed on the Iowa Nurse Aide Registry and are eligible to be hired as a certified nurse aide in a long term care facility.
