Truck load of turkeys upsets on U.S. 30 Expressway

A semi-trailer truck loaded with live turkeys upset at about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, July, 17, on the U.S.?30 Expressway west of Toledo when the driver swerved to avoid a deer according ot the Tama County Sheriff's Office report.

Carla Mershon Eller, 49, Hubbard, Iowa, was transported to the emergency room at UnityPoint Health, Marshalltown, by Toledo ambulance with believed minor injuries the sheriff's office report said.

Police radio traffic said some of the turkeys did not survive and it was observed others were loaded onto another truck.

The truck was going east at the time and tipped over on its side in the median.

Eastbound traffic was diverted for a time onto Tama County Road T47 south into Montour while the wreckage was removed.

The report estimates $30,000 damage to the semi.

The Toledo Fire?Department and Montour First Responders were also dispatched to the scene.
