Rick Cooper DVM speaks to Toledo-Tama Kiwanis

At the July 24th meeting, Mary Fasse-Shaw introduced Veterinarian Rick Cooper who spoke to the group about several current issues in the agriculture industry.

He pointed out it is true there are still more family farms than farms owned-by large corporations. It is of concern that small farms have more of a struggle to survive, but they still outnumber their corporate competitors.

He addressed some myths. First, the concept that greenhouse gasses are mostly caused by cows. He said only 3% of those gasses come from cows - the rest are from manmade situations. Then he assured the group that there are not antibiotics or hormones in the beef that goes to the grocery store.

Another myth has to do with organically raised beef. Using 168 samples of organically raised beef and comparing those samples to samples of nonorganically raised beef, tests found the same amount of e-coli. Dr. Cooper also said that certified Angus beef is a product of a Madison Avenue's sales pitch. He pointed out that when the hide comes off an animal, the meat is all the same.

Health Concerns

He mentioned two concerns. First, a health concern is that eating beef is not a healthy practice. He said that eating beef is much like eating anything else - all things in moderation. The body needs the consumption of beef, but it should not be overdone.

A startling fact he mentioned was that in our country, we throw away enough food everyday to fill the Rose Bowl. Considering the problem of hunger in the US and in the world, that is a disturbing picture.

Dr. Cooper wishes that we still had a contact with our farms and farmers. We no longer know how farming works, meaning we have lost part of our heritage.
