Bettie Murphy Bernardy, 92, of Tama, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2019 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 10:30 AM at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Dennis Conway and Deacon Thom Winninger officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2019 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Bettie was born on November 21, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Viola (Kascht) Winninger.

She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Waterloo.

On August 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to George Murphy in Waterloo, Iowa. Together they had ten children. He passed away in 1979. On December 29, 1990, she married Ben Bernardy. He passed away in 2013.

Bettie previously worked at the Tama News Herald, selling advertising and then worked at and retired from Tama County Health. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama and CCW. Bettie enjoyed music, traveling, and craftwork. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Michael (Wendy) Murphy of Hannibal, MO, Susan (Craig) Auffart of Cincinnati, OH, Tim Murphy of Tama, Joe (Kay) Murphy of Toledo, Tom (Chris) Murphy of Tama, Ann (Burdette) Brown of Northfield, MN; sons-in-law, David Reinier of Des Moines and Rick Moesch of Troy, MO; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; five step-children, Margaret (Refugio) Arellano of Alison Viejo, CA, Cathy (Paul) Brugman of San Diego, CA, Martin Bernardy of Santee, CA, Ben (Carrie) Bernardy of Coronado, CA, and Charles (Rebecca) Bernardy of San Diego, CA; eleven step-grandchildren; four great-step-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands, George and Ben; four children, Rebecca Reinier, Kathy Moesch, Dr. James Murphy, and David Murphy; two grandchildren, Brian Young and Andrew George; and one brother, Larry Winninger.

Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama.
