To add South Tama first grade classroom

Over 20 students in each of five South Tama Elementary School 1st grade classrooms in Tama has resulted in the addition of a sixth room in the weeks just after the fall session got underway.

Meeting in special session Tuesday evening, Sept. 3, the school board decided on a 4-0 voice vote to follow the administration recommendation to increase the classroom numbers.

The enrollment figure from Tuesday showed two classes each with 24 students, two with 23 and one with 22.

The board had anticipated based upon earlier figures the numbers would be over 20 students per class in each of the five 1st grade and 3rd grade classrooms.

Superintendent Jared Smith said "the target is to stay under 20 (students)" at these grade levels. However, he said Elementary Principal Brad Schweppe was comfortable with 3rd grade classes remaining over the 20 student mark.

A classroom which is only used on a p[art-time basis will house the additional classroom.

The teaching position will be posted, Smith said.

Anne Michael, who is a retired South Tama high school teacher and a former STC School Board member urged the board Monday to proceed with adding the classroom. She stressed basic skills are learned at this level with students needing as much classroom attention as possible.

Personnel

Board members approved personnel hiring and changes including Maria Cervantes, trauma informed para-professional at the Partnership Center; Stacie Holmes, half-time middle school and half-time high school special education; Rashell Mendoza and Jaylee Neave, full-time high school paraeducators; Tiffany Matney, half-time middle school paraeducator; Ron Lowe and David Cantownwine, school bus drivers.
