UPDATE: Wanted person arrested in Tama

Tama Police Press release- 6:25 p.m.- Wednesday, Sept. 11:

On Wednesday 09/11/2019 at 1:33 p.m. Tama PD took a report in the office of a argument in the 700 block of Wilson street. As officers arrived a female and male subject were found near the rear of the property. Once additional officers arrived the male fled on foot after giving a false name. The male after a short chase was lost by officers near the 800 block of Park street. A ALERT IOWA was placed to advise citizens of the situation. During this time the female subject Kayla Schrader was questioned and arrested for disorderly conduct. During this time officers were able to identify the suspect as Canaan Wilson . It was found that he was wanted as an escapee from the department of corrections, wanted from Marshalltown Police Department. A short time later as officers and Deputies were in the area a resident called 911 to report a male subject believed to be the suspect in his garage. Prior to officers arrival the suspect fled on foot. Officers found him in a near by property and again chased him on foot for several blocks. At 2:50 he was taken into custody at gun point. A big shout out to the public on assisting this including one citizen that ran barefoot on the street to the south of this to assist officers. Assisting agencies were Tama County Sheriffs Office, Toledo Police, and Tama County Communications. Mr. Wilson has been charged with Interference with official acts (simple misdemeanor), Disorderly Conduct (simple misdemeanor), Providing False Identification (simple misdemeanor), and Burglary in the 3rd degree (D felony)

Remember all individuals are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Law officers have taken the man sought into custody in an east side Tama residential area it was rported about 3 p.m. and the alert issued earlier has been cancelled.

It has not yet been reported what the subject was being sought for.

Tama and Toledo police and Tama County Sheriff's deputies converged on an area south of St. Patrick Church in Tama where the suspect was taken into custody.

A neighbor who witnessed the incident told The News-Herald the wanted person was in a shed behind a house and fled about two blocks to the east where he was caught by officers.


An alert was issued just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, for residents in Tama and Toledo to be on the lookout for a person and to lock their doors.

The person was last observed in the 800 block of Park Street in Tama.

He is described as a black male with dreadlocks wearing a black shirt, gray sweatpants and black shoes.

Call 911 if you observe the person but do not approach.

The message was issued on the Tama County emergency Alert System. It did not reveal the status of hte perosn.
