It’s not for women only! October Breast Cancer Awareness event is set

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tama County Public Health and Home Care will be hosting a luncheon at the Otter Creek Nature Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to celebrate any breast cancer survivor or their families.

R.S.V.P.'s are suggested by Oct. 14 but are not required. The event is FREE to all those that attend.

There will be a brief program at Noon with food and fellowship.

At this time there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes men and women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.

About 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.

About 41,760 women will die from breast cancer.

Men can get breast cancer too! It is estimated that 2,670 men will have breast cancer in 2019 with 500 dying from breast cancer.

The average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 12%. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer. Tama County Church Women's groups are assisting with this event by providing sandwiches, salads and desserts. Churches providing lunch are Traer United Methodist Church, Garwin Christian Church, Carlton Brethren Grace Church, Toledo First Presbyterian Church, Grace Believers Community Church, Assembly of God Church, Christ United Methodist Church, Peace United Church of Christ, Traer St. Paul's Catholic Church, Tama St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Tama St. Pat's Catholic Church and the General Foundation of Women's Club-Iowa Toledo Woman's Club.
