It's a three-peat for South Tama County senior, Callie Frakes. On Thursday, October 24 Frakes and the rest of the STC Cross Country team travelled to Pella, Iowa where they competed at the Class 3A Cross Country State qualifying meet. The meet was held at the Central College Cross Country course.

Frakes was elated after the meet. She qualified for State her freshman year. Then an injury derailed much of her sophomore year and she wasn't able to compete. She returned her junior year and also qualified.

"I feel super good. It's my senior year so that I've been wanting to accomplish. I've been nervous the past week so I feel a lot of relief right now knowing that I made it in," said Frakes.

Frakes finished 6th overall with a time of 20:16, securing her third trip to the State Cross Country meet.

"Coming in I was told that I would be around 7th or 8th so I knew I was going to be in the top 10. I finished 6th which is the lowest I've finished at Districts so far."

STC competed at the WaMaC conference meet the week before at the Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester. There, Frakes broke the school record with at time of 20 minutes.

"This course compared to last weeks definitely had more hills in it."

The runners could not have asked for better weather. It was a sunny afternoon with temps in the low 50's. A few days of rain leading up to the District meet did make the course quite muddy in spots according to Frakes.

The final stretch of the course had the runners going uphill. Frakes was neck and neck with host school Pella's Caroline McMartin. Frakes had enough in her to pass McMartin on her right side and finished three seconds ahead of the senior.

"It felt really good. I was running with a Dallas Center Grimes girl for most of the race. She whispered good job to me and I said thank you and around two miles I kind of took off and before I knew it there was a Pella girl that I was trying to pace myself with. Before the race started I knew I wanted to try and stay with her and I ended up passing her at the end of the race so I felt pretty accomplished," said Frakes.

The senior has her goals set for the State meet.

"My goal for State is to PR again. That's definitely my goal."

STC's assistant coach, Baron Davis, was at the helm of the ship on Thursday.

"We knew Callie would be fine. She did what she did all year and executed. We thought Alyssa might have a shot but it just didn't come together for her today. I think that will light a fire under her for next year and hopefully get her to State next year," said assistant coach Baron Davis.

Chyma came in 27th (21:47), Jojo Tyynismaa 37th (22:34), Makayla Backen 67th (26:34) and Neena Lasley 70th (27:23).

On the boys side the season didn't end quite the way they had planned but Davis was nonetheless pleased with their performance.

"It's been a rough season for the boys. We had some injuries and some other things we couldn't control which hurt us a little bit. But the kids we have here today ran really well today. They ran similar times to what they did a week ago at conference on a tougher course. They ran hard and that's all we can ask," said Davis.

Senior, Garrett Arp finished first for the Trojans at 25th (18:10), Clayton Graff 64th (19:58), Jonathan Meyer 66th ( 20:02), Trusten Rosenberger 67th (20:06), Mitch Knock 70th (20:34), Ethan Babinat 72nd ( 20:45) and Devon Slagle (21:35).

The State Cross Country meet will be held on Saturday, November 2 at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The girls Class 3A race is set for 12 p.m.
