New Tama mayor, city council approve annual appointments

Tama Mayor Doug Ray made department appointments with the approval of city council as one of his first acts in the seat Monday night, Jan. 6.

The yearly appointments include City Clerk- Alyssa Hoskey, Deputy City Clerk Sierra Berger, City Attorney Dan Rathjen, official newspaper- Tama News-Herald and official bank depositories- Lincoln Savings Bank and The State Bank of Toledo.

Council member Emily Babinat was appointed mayor pro tem.

The council agreed to make an appointment to the seat left open by Ray's move to the mayor's post when they meet on Jan. 20.

Four applications have been received including from former council member Kenny McAdoo, Randy Fairchild, Jeff Large and Matthew Beatty. All four were in the eight-way race for three at-large council seats in November.

City voters may file a petition within 14 days of an appointment calling for a special election. It would require signatures of at least 10 percent of the voters in the Nov. 5 city election according to Tama County Elections administrator Karen Rohrs

Other city appointments for 2020 include: public safety - Mayor Ray, chair and a vacant position; public works and health and social services- Ray, chair, council member Aaron Haughey; culture and recreation- Babinat, chair and council member Anne Michael; economic development- council member Larry Thomas and Ray; general government- Babinat, chair and Michael; business type activity- Haughey, chair, and a vacant seat.

Fire Department and Ambulance Service

Officers for the fire department and the ambulance service chosen by their memberships and approved by the council are:

FireDepartment- Richard Jimenez, chief, Jeremy Cremeans, assistant chief, Brian Hanus, training captain, Kristy Eisentrager, training lieutenant, Steven Dolash, maintenance captain, Jose Gonzalez, maintenance lieutenant, Jeff Large, treasurer, Eric Haughey ,secretary and Dan Vodochodsky, recreation chair.

Ambulance Service- Larry Thomas, director, Duane Backen, assistant director, Randy Comstock, secretary, Jeremy Cremeans, treasurer, Ruth Hildahl, compliance officer and Donovan Horne, maintenance officer.

Meeting Time Change

Regular bi-weekly meetings of the Tama City Council will begin at 5:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 20 instead of a 6 p.m. start which had been in place for several years.

The regular council meetings are on the first and third Mondays of the month.

The council will be meeting in special session on Monday, Jan. 13 to begin work on the 2020-21 budget beginning ta 5 p.m.

In other business on Monday the council approved on 4-0 votes:

Iowa Premium TIFF rebate payment totaling $74,118; Tom Blake construction, Marshalltown, payment for 508 Siegel housing rehabilitation $29,750; and $18,179 to Iowa Pump Works for a sewer pump replacement.

renewal of the Tama-Toledo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6607 liquor license.

set a public hearing on Feb. 3 for comments on the 2020-21 city tax levy rate.

approved reinvestment of city money received from the sale of Tama Pack in Lincoln Savings Bank for a 12-month term at 1.85% interest.
