Trojans drop 9th straight to Independence

January 10, 2020

The South Tama Trojans varsity boys basketball team (0-9) hosted Independence (3-6) on Tuesday, January 7.

Independence started the night with a strong run against the Trojans. The Mustangs had a 10 point lead of 15-5 going into the second quarter. The Trojans defense was able to stave off much offensive production in that second quarter. They held the Mustangs to just seven points while outscoring them with eight points. A late push in the second quarter by the Trojans had STC leaving the court for halftime with some much needed positive energy. The Mustangs still trailed 21-12 but momentum was on STC's side.

Coming out of the halftime locker room the Trojans managed to get within three points of Independence, 24-21. But the Mustangs responded and quickly gained a 10 point lead. The Trojans cut into that lead later in the second half. However once again, Independence managed to put on the gas and regain control.

By the fourth quarter the Trojans were out of steam. Independence outscored STC by 11 points which was good enough for the final of 56-36.

Sonny DeMarce led with 14 points, a career high scoring effort, and 7 rebounds.

Despite the loss, Tuesday's game was the second highest scoring performance (36 points) the STC boys have posted this season since a 43 point game in the season opener against Grinnell. The Trojans were again without leading scorer and key defender, junior Eli Keahna.

The Trojans will be on the road Friday evening to Clear Creek Amana (6-3).
