STC Trojan wrestlers celebrate seniors split dual with W. Delaware, Williamsburg

South Tama hosted two ranked teams from Class 2A for a double dual on Thursday, January 23. The West Delaware Hawks, ranked 1st in Class 2A, and the Williamsburg Raiders ranked 10th (iawrestle.com) gathered in the STC Roundhouse last week.

West Delaware and Williamsburg faced off in the first dual of the evening. The Hawks easily handled the Raiders with a 52-6 win.

The Trojans then faced the number one team. Garrett Arp and his brother Logan Arp were the only two to capture wins for STC. Garrett won 6-3 over Will Ward at 152. Logan Arp also won with the same 6-3 score over Evan Woods at 126.

Between the final dual of the evening the Trojans paused to honor five seniors. Cheerleader Richelle Werner and wrestlers Aaron Neave, Aaron Adams, Mitchell Knock and Garrett Arp along with their parents were all recognized.

The final dual of the night was between South Tama and Williamsburg. The Trojans saw some success with five individual wins but fell 49-23 as a team.

At 160 Williamsburg's Riley Holt pinned Gavin Jimenez (1:10). At 170 Brayden Smith stuck Nick Marovets (5:43).

Then senior Mitchell Knock earned a 8-3 decision win over Max Meade at 182. Knock has been wrestling JV much of the season but was able to fill in the absence of Payton Vest who was out sick.

At 195 another STC senior Aaron Neave also won by pinning Tyler Portwood (1:32).

The next six matches all favored Wiilliamsburg. Billy Grout pinned Kalem Schrock at 220. Cole Cremeens won 8-1 over Rudy Papakee at 285. At 106 Tytan Guerroro pinned Brody Chyma (4:26). Then Gavin Jensen received a forfeit in the Trojans open weight of 113. At 120 Kayden Gryp won by major decision (11-2) over Ethan Cruikshank at 120.

Logan Arp cut into the Raiders momentum by winning 16-4 over Chase Malloy at 126. At 132 the Raiders were back at it with Sam Van Dee pinning Haydin Branan (:29). At 138 Jalen Schropp who is ranked first in Class 2A pinned Brady Knode (1:52). At 145 Kam Royster pinned Boden Koehler (2:36).

Garrett Arp ended the night with a win for the Trojans by defeating Gable Dayton by major decision (15-6).

"Aaron Adams is a first year wrestler and the other three are three kids who have been in the program through middle school at least and have worked really hard for us for four years and done some awesome things and are some of our leaders now and are tough guys who have worked really hard for the program," said Nate Van Dyke of his seniors.

The Trojans will start post season on Saturday, February 1 with the WaMaC Conference meet hosted by West Delaware before travelling to Union (LaPorte City) for sectionals on February 8.
