Orpheum doesn’t stop competing with private movie houses

Here's the announcement last week from Iowa Valley:

Free Orpheum Family Movies Fridays / Saturdays in July

MARSHALLTOWN The Orpheum Theater Center, 220 E. Main St., is offering a free Summer Family Movie Series thanks to the financial support of several Marshalltown businesses. The movies are free, but tickets must be obtained from one of the movie sponsors...

Once more, here's the question: Where's the educational value?

Couple this with their summer Friday night concerts and whatever else pops up, you must call this the showcase venue for downtown Marshalltown.

Sure, some local banks and businesses are paying the cost of the movies.

But, who is paying for the lights, the camera and the action? Iowa Valley Community College District taxpayers continue to bear the price for Marshalltown entertainment.
