Personnel matters before South Tama School Board

On the eve of the $20.8 million and related issues vote Monday night, March 2, the South Tama School Board members met with a light agenda before them.

Approved was 1st reading of board policy changing starting time for regular meetings on the 3rd Monday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Board policy revisions require three readings before any changes are enacted.

Personnel

Contracts were approved by the board including naming a new assistant high school principal and activities director. On a 5-0 voice vote, Anthony Jahr was hired for the post effective in August.

Superintendent Jared Smith said Jahr's experience as a head coach for both football and track at the BCLUW High School should serve well in the activities post. Jahr currently teaches high school science at BCLUW.

He replaces Brent Bagnall in the post. Bagnall's contract was terminated by the board on a 4-1 vote in December effective at the end of the current school year.

The contract of Joe Tafta, juvenile court liaison, was terminated by the board Monday night with an effective date of Feb. 28.

Contracts were also approved for Angela Barr, high school special education strat. 1; Lon Wilkerson, assistant varsity softball coach - 9th grade; and Josh Bly, assistant varsity boys soccer coach.

The resignation of Aaron Yuska, assistant high school boys basketball coach was accepted effective immediately.

The board approved 1st reading of a revision of board policy changing the starting date for regular board meetings scheduled on the 3rd Monday of each month to 5 p.m. from 5:30 p.m.

Snow Dates

Supt. Smith reported the district has 10.5 hours of extra time which was allotted for weather-related school delays or cancellations. He said barring any unusual weather events South Tama should remain on schedule for the last day for classes on May 29 and the last day for teaching staff to be June 4.

In other action- the board approved on a 5-0 voice vote third reading adoption of Board Policy 900 - Buildings and sites.
