Indoor track season is underway and one of the largest meets, the A.D. Dickinson Relays was hosted at the University of Northern Iowa on Monday, March 9. It was an all girl event with the boys to take to the track the following evening.

Three schools in Tama County including South Tama, Meskwaki Settlement and Union competed at the meet.

A couple of area highlights included STC senior Callie Frakes's run in the 3000 Invite. This was a race participants had to be invited to compete in. Also for South Tama, Jojo Tyynismaa had a top 10 finish in the 200 Meter Dash, coming in 7th place.

"I like where we've started so far," said STC track coach Levi Hunerdosse, "We ran last week and the beginning of the season is always a lot of question marks but we start answering those questions and we start to figure out where the pieces of the puzzle are going to fall. We are young. We currently have three seniors out. We have a large junior class with a lot of potential."

Tyynismaa returns as a state silver medal winner in the 100 meter hurdles and also took 10th last year at state in the 400 meter dash.

The Meskwaki Warriors are under the new leadership of STC and Simpson Alumni, Dylan Kalinay. Kalinay graduated from South Tama in 2014.

He will bring his own track success into his coaching. In his junior year at STC Kalinay was part of the Class 3A State Champion 4x100 team (Dylan Kalinay, Kaleb Davenport, Daryl Bidwell and Kyle Stephenson). He was the only returning member of the STC 4x100 relay team in his senior year. The 2014 quartet of Kalinay, Tyler Blocker, Zach Morris and Robert Tyynismaa placed 5th overall. He went on to have many successes at Simpson College including becoming an All-American.
