TOLEDO CHRONICLE – IOWA CITY (SPECIAL) – The Meskwaki Settlement High School is officially LEED Silver Certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The new $22 million addition designed by Leo A Daly combines 21st century technology with an aim for preserving the customs and traditions of Meskwaki culture.

The USGBC indicates a property’s overall sustainability by awarding points for each sustainable feature.

The high school addition was opened in the fall of 2009. It includes two floors of classrooms, a 1,000-seat gymnasium, library, study-atrium and office space.

The High School was added to the Meskwaki Settlement Elementary School.

The project made it through the final review without a single request for clarification and earned every point pursued – 37 points total,” commented Darin Knapp, vice-president.

The project earned points in each of the six LEED categories, focusing primarily on Indoor Environmental Quality, which includes indoor air quality, occupant thermal comfort and a design which provides natural light throughout the building.

In addition the project earned a point in Innovation and Design by creating a Green Educational Program.

The curriculum and interactive exhibit describes the LEED system, as well as how the High School achieved LEED Silver Certification.
