New plan in the works for Toledo city-wide clean-up

There will be a city-wide clean up in Toledo this spring but the “cleaning” method is changing.

City council members agreed on Monday, Feb. 25, to stop the block-by-block residential canvas by city crews.

While all the details have not yet been worked out, it is being planned for Wednesday and Thursday, April 24 and 25. Residents will transport their own disposables to the Reinig-Toledo Civic Center parking lot. There, roll-off dumpsters will be located. For a fee, which may require pre-payment, you may get rid of your accumulation.

Some provision to assist elderly and differently-abled residents was also discussed.

Brush Pick Up

A free, residential brush pick up and disposal by city crews may also be planned for the same dates Kendall Jordan, superintendent of public works suggested.

For the 2018 April clean up, a $10 fee was assessed. This generated $2,148 in fees from 112 participants with extra charges collected for pick up of televisions, computer monitors, appliances and tires.

The expenses listed for the day included $1,408 landfill fees, advertisement $189 and payroll for six city employees $1,538 for a total of $3,133 which resulted in a $985 loss.

Also being explored are separate disposal containers or areas at the same location for white goods – home appliances, metal items and possibly for televisions and computers.

Last year the city passed along Tama County Landfill disposal prices of $10 each for appliances, $20 each for televisions and computer monitors and $4 for regular pickup and car tires.

Prohibited were such items as construction material including concrete and roofing, vehicles of any kind, boats, campers and trailers, furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters and household liquid and hazardous waste and paint.
