Rural Traer homicide remains unsolved two years later
Father’s Day marks grim occasion
TRAER – Father’s Day last Sunday marked two years to the day since Ryan Roy Cooper – a father of four – was found dead due to a gunshot wound at his residence south of Traer.
But despite both the Iowa Dept. of Criminal Investigation and the Tama County Sheriff’s Office continuing to work the case, there have been no arrests made.
On June 18, 2021, Cooper, 42, was found deceased in his home seven miles southwest of Traer following a 911 call made at 4:35 a.m. that morning.
The next day, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner announced Cooper’s autopsy was complete with the pathologist ruling the cause of death was homicide and the manner of death was a gunshot wound.
Cooper’s death has been classified as ‘violent.’
As part of a recent report that aired this past week on KWWL, Cooper’s sister Michelle Wilson said Cooper’s family continues to miss him.
“Those are the days that are the toughest, the days that we know would be special for him,” Wilson said in reference to Father’s Day.
Wilson said she is praying someone comes forward who knows something, telling KWWL: “We’re doing the best we can – we’re trying to be patient – but we’re never, we’re never going to be quiet or silent. You may not hear us, but we’re fighting.”
In 2022, the Ryan Cooper Family Foundation was founded in honor of “Husband, Father, Brother, Son and Friend, Ryan Cooper,” according to the foundation’s website.
“He was a loving father to [four] children,” the website further states. “Ryan was devoted to the family farm and cattle business. Always the first to lend a hand and show up to help, we honor his legacy by providing support to others facing hardships.”
Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers continues to offer a $17,000 reward for information “that brings closure to this incident.”
Those with information regarding Ryan Cooper’s death are asked to contact the Tama County Sheriff’s office at 641-484-3760, or text CEDAR plus the tip to 274637 (CRIMES).

As Cooper’s death continues to go unsolved, the foundation asks that the public keeps his name “out there.”
“We will never stop looking for justice for Ryan and closure for his family,” the foundation’s website declares.
