Tama mayor submits resignation

Ray.
TAMA – Late last week, Tama City Mayor Doug Ray put in his resignation. Mr. Ray only had a few months left in his term. The now former Mayor is believed to have resigned due to dissent. However, no one has officially gone on record as to the formal reason for Ray’s resignation. When asked about Doug’s leaving, Tama City Clerk Jill Apfel stated that he didn’t say in his letter of resignation, that she did not know of any problems, and that “you’d have to ask him” for the reason.
Ray has been the Mayor of Tama for several years, guiding the community through a derecho, a worldwide pandemic, and the recent closure of the Tama Paperboard. The latter hit particularly hard as Doug worked for decades in the mill.
At Monday’s Tama city council meeting, Ray’s resignation was accepted and made official. The council also thanked him for his service to the city. Brian Hanus has stepped in as Tama mayor pro tem.
