With one last photo, Abigail Chyma starts her week of “Learning by doing” in the capital city.
During a normal soccer practice, Abigail Chyma got a phone call notifying her she was in the running for Girls State. Twenty minutes later, she received another phone call informing her she was to attend the event representing her community.
After receiving positive recommendations from the guidance office and a few things falling into place, Chyma was set to travel to the campus of Drake University and get some hands-on government experience. Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary of Iowa, Iowa Girls State is a hands-on “learn by doing” foray into the government and the political system.
Her days at the event included a jam-packed schedule that kept her occupied from 7 a.m. all the way until 10:30 at night before an eventual lights out at 11.
Some of Chyma’s favorite activities from the week included learning to fold a flag, watching a flag burning ceremony, and achieving the office of Civil Service Commissioner. Another fond memory is sneaking deserts out of the cafeteria with her roommates and enjoying an evening snack.
Chyma would like to thank Brenda Youngbear and the Legion Auxiliary for the opportunity, and the STC Guidance office for putting her in the running for the event.

Coming away with more connections and an appreciation for the American political and governmental system, Chyma recommends this experience for future STC girls.
