Iowa DOT denies city of Tama’s permit applications for traffic cameras

The city of Tama’s short-lived Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) program officially came to an end last week as officials from the Iowa Department of Transportation rejected the permit applications for both fixed site cameras, one in the 1700 block of McClellan Street and the other in the 500 block of East 13th Street.

In all, just 11 of the 139 fixed site permits — including one in Marshalltown on Lincoln Way — received DOT approval. Applications for sites that began operating after Jan. 1, like Tama’s, which launched in late March, were automatically rejected. After Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill introducing a sweeping new set of restrictions on where and how the cameras could operate and changing the fine structure for violators, units across the state were temporarily shut off over the summer while city officials waited for verdicts from the DOT.

Tama Mayor Brian Hanus said he will “wait and see what happens next” and mentioned the possibility of a class action lawsuit but did not elaborate further.
