Going once, going twice

Last week’s Toledo city council meeting

Last week’s Toledo City Council meeting started out with an auction of sorts, with Mayor Brian Sokol standing in as the auctioneer. Bids were taken for three parcels of farm ground to be rented. No one raised a paddle or spoke at a high rate of speed, but the auction was successful. Parcel 1 went for approximately $9,000. Parcel 2 went for approximately $18,000. And finally, parcel 3 went for approximately $1,000.

Moving swiftly along after the auction, a public hearing was held to vacate the alley at 208 N. Center St. There were no comments from the public, the alley was approved to be vacated, and the second and third readings of the alley vacation ordinance were approved. The Oct. 28 council meeting was the date set for the hearing of the sale of the aforementioned alley.

Another public hearing was had, this one to amend Chapter 69 in the City of Toledo Code of Ordinances regarding parking regulations. There were no comments from the public. The amended ordinance was approved, as well as the waiving of the second and third reading of the ordinance.

A resolution was approved that allows Interstate Power and Light (Alliant) to lease or sell some of the extra space on the fiber cable that runs through Toledo. Lt. Nathan Wunn with the Toledo Police Department was approved to carry over 50 hours of unused vacation time. He has six months to use it or lose it.

City Attorney Mike Marquess reported that the Hotel Toledo is up to code regarding the fire regulations, and everything has been quiet on the nuisance abatement side of things. Things are where they should be with the suits that are pending, and discovery requests have been answered.

The clerk reported that they would be going off to their conference and that the security cameras would be installed soon.

Toledo Police Chief Dan Quigley reported that between Sept. 22 and Oct. 14, the department responded to 162 calls to service and affected nine arrests. The Chief was not at the last council meeting due to attending a conference that covered a wide range of subjects.

SRO Vern Jefferson recently made a presentation about his work in the schools at the library. A couple of new applicants for the department are undergoing testing. There is also the possibility of losing another officer due to life circumstances taking him to another part of the state. The department has also recently made two arrests for sex offender registry violations, regarding exclusion zones.
