Who’s Hanus?

Get to know STC’s newest board member Joe Hanus

At last week’s board meeting Joe Hanus was sworn in to fill the vacant Director District 2. With his appointment announced, one question arose above all others, who is Hanus?

Hanus is a lifelong Tama resident and 2002 graduate of STC. A self described family man, Hanus lives with his wife Heather and their three children Wes, Wyatt, and Mason. Currently Joe works at Hrabak Lumber in Toledo.

After floating a run for school board a few times in the past, this opportunity seemed like the right call to action. Upon seeing the district’s Facebook posting for the open seat, Hanus finally made the decision to enter his name into the pool.

Hanus spoke to the News Chronicle about his thoughts regarding his appointment to the board.

“I don’t like the fact I got this position without being elected. It feels like a handout and that’s not who I am. However, it’s the situation we’re in and I’m going to do my best to serve my community. If they like what I’m doing they’ll vote for me in three years when the term ends.”

Hanus listed a number of priorities and issues, all of which he feels passionate about.

“What really caught my attention was that our district doesn’t have a shop teacher. Not all students are going to end up going to a college. My oldest son for example wants to find a trade he likes and would love to be in different shop classes now at the school. I would like to look into other option or finding a qualified shop teacher”

Hanus also mentioned finding the best budget and financial responsibilities.

“The district is funded off taxpayer money, I feel my role is to find responsible ways to best serve our kids and honor the money of citizens in our school district.”

While Hanus has flown under the radar, he hopes as the newest member of the board, he can listen and hear out community members.

“At the end of the day, it’s my job to listen and represent everyone.”

Hanus will now serve as District 2 Director until November 2027.
