Early retirement discussions continue for STC School Board
Discussions were aplenty at Monday’s board meeting. Kicking off the meeting was Elizabeth Dolezal re-elected as board president and Rick Hopper selected to be vice-president. After swearing in, the meeting moved to discussions and presentations. Sam Peska presented as the director of student services and on behalf of the partnership center. Peska covered topics ranging from student success to staff shortages in the special education department. The need for teachers was a common theme of the night, which eventually bled into the early retirement discussion.
Seth Kock spoke during the beginning of the meeting about his stance on early retirement, the lone voice during public comment. When the board got to the topic the discussion began with no direction apparent.
Mr. Cain echoed his thoughts from the previous meeting that losing qualified staff poses a risk of not being able to fill positions. Different ideas were thrown around but nothing ended up being set in stone. A work session will be held on December 3rd in regards to the policy.
Education Support Personnel Salary Supplement was discussed as a potential bonus opportunity for staff. 38,000 dollars was acquired from the state and the board discussed how to divvy out the funds in a fair way to deserving teachers with few absences. The item will be further discussed at the next meeting.
The board meeting ended after going into closed session to discuss details of the annual superintendent review. The next meeting is scheduled for December 9th.
