TOLEDO — This week’s Toledo City Council meeting had only one agenda item, but that single item drew an excited crowd.

Young and bright-eyed Igor Dias was sworn in by Mayor Brian Sokol to the Toledo Police Department, after which Chief Dan Quigley pinned a brand new badge to the officer’s chest.

Officer Dias is new to Iowa, having only lived in Marshalltown for a handful of months. The Iowa weather may be a bit of a shock to him as he hails from Florida. Dias has been a little bit everywhere, as he was born in Connecticut but has also lived in Brazil with his parents.

All that traveling will more than likely pay off in more ways than one — crucial to his new position with the police department is that Dias is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. On just one of his first days on the job, he stepped in as a much-needed translator.

Dias started with the department last week and is scheduled to go to the Iowa Police Academy in January.

Other business

The public works department reported on the work that they did with the Jolly Light displays in the park. About 200 vehicles reportedly went through the park on its first night. If the Jolly Lights event becomes a yearly one, the city may have to look into expanding electricity in the park. The department is ready for winter and has been working on the budget.

Toledo Police Chief Quigley reported that between Nov. 11 and Nov. 24, officers responded to 80 calls to service and affected 5 arrests. The Durango once again was in need of repairs, this time to its camshaft positioning sensor. This caused multiple problems including keeping the speed of the vehicle under approximately 60 miles per hour. Which was most embarrassing to Kendall Jordan who drove the vehicle to Belle Plaine for repair.
