Tama man arrested for allegedly threatening family, stealing AR-15
A Tama man was arrested last Monday afternoon over allegations that he stole his stepfather’s AR-15 style rifle and had made threats to kill his family.
According to a criminal complaint, 18-year-old Logan Levi Kurth was charged with first degree burglary (a Class B felony), second degree theft (a Class D felony) and possession of a controlled substance — methamphetamine, a serious misdemeanor.
In a subsequent press release, Tama County Sheriff Casey Schmidt said they were able to recover the stolen firearm without incident, and he thanked the Tama Police Department and the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
“I would like to acknowledge our dispatchers for their critical role in coordinating this response. Their efficient communication was extremely important in making sure there was a quick resolution,” Schmidt said. “Tama County residents can take pride in the work demonstrated by law enforcement and dispatchers during this incident. I commend the deputies, officers and dispatchers for their outstanding response in effectively and efficiently neutralizing the threat.”
Kurth has since posted a $25,000 bond and been released, and an initial appearance was scheduled for Jan. 28 at 9 a.m.
