School board discusses work based learning

More staff transfers approved

At Monday’s South Tama County board meeting, work based learning was a lengthy discussion. High school counselor Dan Lopez and iJAG specialist Jill Kienzle presented to the board on current progress being made in that area.

Driven by Iowa Senate File 2411, schools in the state are working to meet requirements that do have an impact on their statewide report card, STC being no different. Through the conversation, the duo shared stories of students utilizing work based learning, ways they are improving for the future and following ever updating legislation.

Later in the meeting, Superintendent John Cain proposed a liaison position being created to manage a potential work based learning program in the school district. Along with this proposal, Cain mentioned going back to one iJAG position instead of the two currently being utilized. iJAG, which stands for Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates, is a statewide nonprofit designed at helping students through graduation, learning, and employability.

In other business, South Center Street in Toledo, which sits alongside the new middle school, is in need of repairs. Two options given were totally repairing the roadway and repouring concrete or a three inch asphalt overlay, which would serve as a few year temporary fix. The board discussed the issue and will make decisions off of bids at a future meeting.

Two current middle school staffers were approved in their transfers to the high school. Both Paula Graves, who teaches science, and Leti Babinat, a special education teacher, will teach the same subjects at the high school next year. This follows middle school principal and assistant principal Ben Adams and Scott Bolen having their transfers approved at the last meeting.

The board went into closed session at the end of the meeting. The next board meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 24.
