As the South Tama County board of education approved personnel at Monday’s meeting, smiles came across the faces of Jennifer Nelson and Joseph Otten. Nelson was hired as the new middle school principal and Otten as the assistant principal. Currently, both are working in the Marshalltown school district, Otten as a special education teacher at Miller Middle School and Nelson as an Elementary Instructional coach. Superintendent John Cain expressed his excitement for the two new hires and mentioned being excited for the completion of the new middle school facility.
Current High School Principal Robert Boley and assistant principal Amy Karg presented to the board on the status of the high school with data presented from the first semester.
The board approved the creation and advertisement of a new Career Connected Learning position. The newly created position will oversee all of the work based learning opportunities in the district.
After sending out bids and having recommendations made from ISG, the board approved furniture bids for the new middle school. Cain mentioned how the cost came a bit under what the district expected.
A special education bonus by caseload was tabled for the next meeting. STC has been struggling to fill these special education positions for a few years, and as a result, educators have been taking on more and more students going above and beyond.

The board dismissed at 6:25 p.m. with the next meeting scheduled for March 10.
