Lorraine Avery

The kind and selfless soul of Lorraine Pearl Avery, 98, passed away on March 5, 2022 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Warren Riley officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from 5 -7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

Lorraine was born February 7, 1924, in rural Howard Township, Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Louise (Lorenzen) Brandt. She was the youngest of four children.

Lorraine attended Howard #7 Country School. and graduated from Toledo High School in 1942 where she was the only “Country School” cheerleader.

Lorraine was united in marriage to Rex M. Avery on April 21, 1946. She was a homemaker and helped on the farm taking care of the small animals and chickens. She loved all animals, especially dogs, and had a special dog, Poopsie. During the war, she worked at the Hemp Mill in Traer.

Lorraine was a member of the Columbia Women’s Group. She enjoyed baking pies and tea rings and cooking for her large family and having family get togethers. She also enjoyed having coffee at King Tower with her lady friends and liked to dance.

Lorraine is survived by nine children, Dianne Avery of Marshalltown, Lea (Earl) Schock of New Sharon, Laura (Martin) Christensen of Toledo, Sally (Roger) Dostal of Lincoln, IA, Becky (Mike) Hagerty of Muscatine, Roger (Marilee) Avery of Osborn, MO, Carole (Ken) Damon of Eldora, Stan (Ilona) Avery of Tama, and Alice (Seth) Koch of Tama; sixteen grandchildren, Brian (Stephanie) Dostal, Michelle (Matt) Koch, Kristin (Jay) Dreyer, Sarah (Jurgen) Block, Aaron (Courtney) Schock, Bill (Stephanie) Montz, John (Kiley) Hagerty, Tom (Sarah) Hagerty, Andrew (Ashley) Christensen, David (Mary) Hagerty, Lars (LeAnn) Avery, Jerra Avery / Drew, Clint Damon / Brittany, Claire Damon / Tyler, Grant Koch / Tyieshia, and Lane Koch / Serena; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; four nieces; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rex on November 11, 2015; two sisters, Bernice Eisele, and Lucille Walz Cobet; and one brother, Alfred Brandt.
