John William Duffy

On June 15, 2023, John William (Bill) Duffy died peacefully in his home, with his wife Shirley by his side.

John (Bill) was born on October 24th, 1936, son of John Luke and Ina (Brecht) Duffy. He graduated from Tama High School in 1954. After attending the University of Iowa, he worked in drafting and design engineering at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, Iowa.

On November 15, 1955, Bill united in marriage with Shirley Ann Scott. Bill and Shirley resided in Tama, Iowa where they raised their four daughters: Diane, Erin, Kelli and Kathleen. After his retirement, Bill and Shirley moved to Bull Shoals, Arkansas. In 2017, they moved to Venice, Florida.

Bill was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors. He could always recommend a good book. He spent a lot of time walking through the timbers around Tama county hunting and looking for mushrooms. He also enjoyed fishing. Bill had a bit of Irish wit about him and could always make you smile. He made friends everywhere he went. Bill was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Venice, Florida. He had a true humanitarian heart and volunteered a lot of his time to Habitat for Humanity, Kindness Inc., and Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family. He always looked forward to family gatherings and absolutely adored his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley Duffy, daughters: Diane Duffy (Erick), Kelli Duffy McCreary (Craig) and Kathleen Duffy (Mike) and son-in-law Tim Hanrahan. His Grandchildren: Abbie Duffy Olsen (Tracy Olson). Emily Hanrahan (John Wilder), Mary Hanrahan (Brad Johnson), John Hanrahan (Jamie Gecox), Logan Hanrahan (Brittany Zastrow), Campbell McCreary and Shane Vest.

He is survived by siblings: Norman Duffy, Paul Duffy, Joe Duffy, Maureen Duffy Beck, Larry Duffy, Alice Duffy Meyer and sister-in-law Doreen Duffy.

Preceding him in death are his parents John Luke and Ina Duffy, daughter Erin Duffy Hanrahan, grandson Brendan Hanrahan, sister Delores Duffy and brother Don Duffy. Brother-in-law Robert Beck and Sister-in-laws, Jan Duffy and Dolly Duffy.

A memorial service will be held October 14, 2023, 3pm-7pm at the American Legion in Tama.
