Shirley Otterman
TOLEDO-Shirley Maye Otterman, 100, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo with Pastor Clint Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Friday, November 15, 2024 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.
Shirley was born on October 23, 1924, in Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Dell and Ruth (Beal) Fuller.
She graduated from Toledo High School. After graduation, she received her Normal Teaching Certificate.
On January 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to Wayne W. Otterman at her parents’ home in Toledo, Iowa. She and Wayne owned and operated a popular grocery store named Wayne’s Market in downtown Toledo for many years and she ended her career as an Assistant City Clerk at Toledo City Hall. She had many jobs over the years, including country school teacher, bookkeeper for Central Iowa Grain and various other bookkeeping positions, including Sunny Hill Care Center. Shirley sold AVON beauty products, and worked at Rebecca’s Dress Shop in Toledo.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo and volunteered at Sunny Hill Care Center many times.
Shirley liked to read, play Solitaire, feed her birds (especially Cardinals) and go on car rides. She enjoyed going to church, spending time with her friends, and attending other gatherings. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and grandkids.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Dan) Kaley of Ankeny and Peggy Francomb of Elizabeth, IL; six grandchildren, Chris (Michelle) Kaley, Jeff (Jenny) Kaley, Jennifer Kaley (Adam Kirby), Elizabeth Francomb (Matt Ricketts) Megan (Taylor) Cole, and Molly Wand (T.J. Reif); six great-grandchildren; and several cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and husband, Wayne on February 12, 1988.
Memorials may be directed to Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo.
