Magic Mike 6XL: Cheddar Cheese and an Old Stick

Michael D. Davis.

Opposites, man, yin and yang, cats and dogs, cookies and lettuce, they are some funny things.

The counterpart or the thing that completely contradicts an item. I’ve known mine my entire life. My sister. See, there is a way that we are opposite already. I don’t mind writing about myself or talking about myself in the local newspaper or what have you. My sister, on the other hand, I know she will read this column on the afternoon of Thursday, July 6, and I just have to hope I’ve been suddenly called away to Lithuania, or I may not survive the night.

The ways that we are opposites are innumerable, but here are some examples. My sister has multiple college degrees; I failed recess in the second grade. I watch movies with Carey Grant and Lon Chaney Jr.; my sister doesn’t know who Carey Grant and Lon Chaney Jr. are. My sister organizes, labels, stacks, and shelves everything in sight; everything I own is in one pile on the floor. And finally, my sister is a Marvel fan, while I think Superman is a god.

In my short, tip of the iceberg, list of examples I failed to mention last week. You see, last week was our birthdays. Me and my sister are only three days apart when it comes to birthdays, hers first, last Saturday in June, then mine, the last Tuesday in June. Now this was a prime example of oil and water personalities. On Saturday, for my sister’s birthday we, of course, did what my sister wanted. This year she wanted to fling herself out of an airplane and plummet to the ground.

Oh, yeah. So, early in the morning, we drive to this place, wait around for about an hour, then watch as she gears up for the jump. My sister then gets in this little airplane that takes off over a cornfield, and somewhere high above, among the clouds and birds she jumps out.

As she floated back down to the earth like the world’s most annoying leaf, I proceeded to take 456 pictures. Oh, and another opposite is unlike me, she doesn’t like to have her picture taken. This is made clear in the photograph I have from Saturday of her flipping me off. All in all, it was a very eventful birthday.

Three days later, it was my turn. I didn’t leave the house. I didn’t get dressed. And I re-watched a horror movie that I’ve now seen for a whopping six times. It was perfect.

My sister and I may be like cheddar cheese and an old stick, opposite in almost every way, but I gotta admit we do have fun every now and again.
